Booker

“It’s been three days!” I stomp from one end of the deck behind the duplex I share with Brady to the other end and grip my phone.

He’s out with Angie on a date, which means they’re probably screwing each other’s brains out.

“This kind of thing takes time.” CJ tries to calm me, but I’m not interested in being handled.

“I know. That’s what Mitzy said. Sam said it too, and you’ve said the same thing more times than I care to count. Why can’t Bravo head down to Nicaragua to be in place when her team does figure it out?”

“We only assume that’s where Matias took her.”

“An assumption backed by a lot of solid data.”

“Booker …”

“Look, he had her father fly across the border. Mitzy tracked her phone headed due south for Nicaragua.”

“It went dead before then.”

“Sure, but you gotta drive through Guatemala to get to Nicaragua.”

“We don’t know that he didn’t board a plane. If that’s the case, Izzy could be anywhere in the world. Putting you in Nicaragua could be disastrous if that’s the case.”

“But it’s a seven-hour flight from here. That’s seven more hours …”

“Booker, I know how you feel. I was in the exact same place when my wife was abducted. It took forever to find where her kidnapper was holding her, but if I’d gone off half-cocked and failed to lay down the necessary groundwork, I might have found her too late.”

“Shit.” I knock my forehead with my fist. “I’m sorry. I forgot.”

“It’s okay, but I bring that up for a good reason. We need actionable intelligence and solid preparation. I can’t let the Guardians go into a foreign country drawing attention to Guardian HRS.”

“I get it.” I hate his words. “Instead of don’t-just-stand-there-do-something, we’re in don’t-do-anything-just-stand-there. It fucking sucks.”

“I know, and I know how it feels. Trust me. Izzy is yours, but she’s ours as well. This doesn’t sit right for anyone. And Forest is already working with his CIA contacts on the ground. We’re prepping resources for when you do go in.”

“So, you think we are going to Nicaragua?”

“I do …” He pauses for a brief moment, “but not enough to send you there yet.”

“Fuck.” It’s impossible to keep the irritation from my tone, but thankfully CJ is the best boss on the planet.

He gets it and he’s not put off when one of us needs to blow off some steam.

I hate standing on the sidelines. Mitzy’s team might be diligently working on finding my girl, but I need to do something.

“I know you said to take time away, but I need time on the range.”

“You sure about that?”

“What better way to calm down?”

“I hear you. Sounds good. Take someone with you.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re a loose cannon right now.”

“I’m not loose anything. I’ve got my shit locked down, just need to vent.”

“And I know exactly what that means on the range. Take a buddy or stay home.” His tone brooks no nonsense.

“Got it.”

The moment he’s off the phone, another call comes in. It’s Gareth, Isabelle’s eldest brother, hoping for an update.
